In 1937, Lindsay was offered the directorship of the Armagh Observatory in northern Ireland. He
seized this opportunity to return home, but remained in close
• 20 • touch with Harvard. Indeed, in the 1940s the Armagh
Observatory collaborated with the Dunsink Observatory outside
Dublin and the Harvard Observatory in planning a new telescope in
South Africa.

Several couples lived within the observatory family and made important contributions to it. Moreover, couples formed at Harvard retained ties to the observatory when careers took them elsewhere.
