On
October i, I971, we will therefore terminate an association
stretching back to 1885 when Rotch founded the Observatory.
Because of the changing needs of basic research at Harvard, it
seemed better that the Observatory endowment be used for other
agencies at Harvard.

In 1893 the State created the Blue Hills Reservation, and three years later leased the summit of Great Blue Hill to Harvard for ninety-nine years. From the outset, there was close collaboration between the Observatory on Blue Hill and the Harvard College Observatory in Cambridge.
