Professor Bailey has completed during the past year a history of the Harvard Observatory, which is shortly to appear as Harvard Monograph No. 3. It deals with the development of Astronomy in New England, and the rise of the Harvard Observatory, which has gone hand in hand with that development.

The son, as retired President of Harvard, felt it in keeping with the spirit of his father's wishes to make part of his inheritance available to the Observatory. CENTER FOR ASTROPHYSICS In 1973 Harvard College Observatory (HCO) joined with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) to form, under a single director, the Center for Astrophysics to pursue "excellence in astrophysical research."
